A 5-Step WiFi Security Self-Check for Small and Medium Businesses

Not every business has a dedicated security team. Here are five basic steps you can take yourself to assess how safe your WiFi really is.

  1. Inventory legitimate APs: list every AP, SSID, location and owner.
  2. Check encryption: remove WEP/WPA and move to WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3.
  3. Separate guest WiFi: the guest network must live on a separate VLAN.
  4. Scan for unknown signals: use a scanning tool regularly to find APs that are not on your list.
  5. Set a policy: forbid staff from installing routers or sharing hotspots from company laptops.
